MEHLVILLE, MO (KTVI) — Mehlville Firefighters lit the grill early for a fundraiser to help the lone survivor of a South-County house fire.
Many of those firefighters rushed to the Gapsch home on August 27, 2013. Thirteen-year-old Mia Gapsch escaped the burning house and asked a neighbor to call 911, because her sister, father, and grandmother were still inside.
Fire Captain Nich Fahs said firefighter Mike Gapsch was on-duty and pulled his own mother from the house.
When it was over, Mia’s 38-year-old father Terry, her 79-year-old grandmother Georgetta, and her 11-year-old little sister Maci died. Mia’s mother had already died a few years ago from cancer.
But, firefighters and classmates at Sperreng Middle School were determined to let Mia know she was not alone. Kids were raising funds all week long. Firefighters kicked off the weekend with a barbecue on the school’s parking lot.
