Augusta to hold public meeting on closed, dangerous road

AUGUSTA, MO (KTVI) — Drivers are ignored “road closed” signs along a stretch of road in Warren County, Missouri Thursday morning.  That roadway is considered so deadly, another city shut it down.

 The town of Augusta, Missouri closed down Augusta Bottom Road late in August of 2013.  That that did not seem to matter to drivers.  One driver after another took the road, and drove around the closure signs – one of which was lying on the ground.

It is not clear if this closure is legal, because another city government closed the road.  Augusta officials believe the shutdown was desperately needed.

The road is unpaved and runs on top of a levee next to two ponds left by the flood of 1993.  It also has no guardrails.

In November 2010, Joseph Volmert died when his car crashed in one of those ponds.  Three weeks before, in October of 2010, 16-year-old Ella Neier lost her life on the same stretch of road when her car also rolled into one of the ponds.

According to EMissourian.com – the online paper for the Washington Missourian — Augusta rebuilt the road with a federal grant after the Great Flood of 1993.  That town closed the road late last month after its insurance company made a wrongful-death payout to Neier’s family.  The company then cancelled the
