ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) — The old Cupples 7 warehouse is set to be demolished, starting this week.

The building has stood for over one hundred years on Spruce Street in Downtown St. Louis.  But, it looks like it only has a few months left.

The city owns the building.  In May, the city`s building commissioner issued an emergency demolition permit.  Treasurer Tishaura Jones said that she loses sleep wondering if the old warehouse will fall before crews can start work.  It sits right next to the 11th Street exit from Interstate-64 and across from the Cupples Station Lofts.

Several developers have come forward, then backed out when they found that it could cost millions to stabilize the structure.  But in June, the city announced that Spirtas Wrecking Company can demolish the building for less than half a million dollars.

Crews fenced off the entire street around the building, closing it to foot and car traffic.  Inspectors said implosion is not an option.  So, city officials said that it should take about three months to take the structure down brick by brick.
