ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) — A vote by the United States House of Representatives could end the bi-state battle to name the new Mississippi River Bridge.
Naming the bridge has proven to be nearly as big a task as building it. But, a compromise could be on the way. On Tuesday, the U.S. House could vote to name the structure “The Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge”.
Last month, the Illinois legislature voted overwhelmingly to name the structure “The Veterans Memorial Bridge”.
But both the Missouri legislature and U.S. Senate have voted to name it simply the “Musial Memorial Bridge” to honor the late Cardinal Hall-of-Famer who died in January of 2013.
So, what’s the big deal with this name? Federal law says both Missouri and Illinois have to agree on one name.
The compromise honors both Musial and military veterans. The late Stan Musial is a World War II veteran.
It has also been proposed that a section be named for Andy Gammon. The 35-year-old died in March 2012, while helping build the bridge.
