(KTVI) — On the first day of class in the Normandy School District, students prepared to head to school without hundreds of their classmates who transferred out of the district.
This district lost its accreditation. It is also losing a lot of money that left with kids, who are now going to school elsewhere. By law, the district has to pay tuition for its students to attend accredited schools. Officials also have to pay to bus students who transferred to the Francis Howell School District in St. Charles County. That is estimated to cost Normandy thousands of dollars for each child who is not sitting in a district classroom.
For the students who stayed, Normandy officials promised new science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes. And, officials said community members will be at the schools to greet the families that chose to return for the new school year.
Students were expected to start arriving at the high school by Monday morning, as the district tried to move forward with the kids they had left.
