BEL RIDGE, MO (KTVI) — Despite some Francis Howell School District parents saying they would not welcome transfer students, Normandy families were optimistic about the first day of school.

In the past, several parents from the unaccredited Normandy School District said they were worried about the minimum forty-minute trip to St. Charles County.  Montez Smith had four kids bound for Francis Howell’s elementary and middle schools.

“I have transportation to get me out there,” he said.  “I am just a phone call away.”

Other Normandy parents said they were worried about how their kids would be received after a tense town hall meeting in St. Charles County.  Several Francis Howell parents said the transfer students would bring crime.

“I’m not worried,” Smith said.  “I think they are going to treat my kids the way they are supposed to be treated.”

Eighteen-year-old J’Von Coleman is bound for his senior year at Francis Howell High School.  He said he already made friends during a “transition day” earlier this week.  He also said there was only one major difference between the unaccredited Normandy district and Francis Howell.

”It doesn’t matter about the school, as long as I have the teachers that give you the knowledge to succeed to go to the college I want to go to,” Coleman said.  “I was getting it at Normandy.  But, there was just a bunch of distractions from other students that were slowing me down from my learning.”

Several buses were expected early Thursday morning near Interstate-170 and Natural Bridge Road.  But, just about all the buses were late picking up students.  But, all parents and kids said they were still looking forward to the first day at their new schools.
