ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) — St. Louis police say 9-year-old who was shot early Wednesday morning is in critical but unstable condition.

The child was shot while riding in a car with his father and two other men.

St. Louis Police say a driver ran into the North Patrol Division on Union Boulevard and Margaretta Avenue just after 3:30 a.m.  The driver asked for help.  Police then found the boy inside a Chevrolet SUV.  St. Louis Fire Department officials said medics rushed the boy to the hospital in critical condition.

Police later confirmed that someone in a second vehicle fired on the car where the boy was found.  This was near Goodfellow Boulevard and Laura Avenue.

So, officers blocked off Goodfellow for two blocks.  They looked for shell casings and other evidence in the street.  Back at the police station, officers walked through the grass, looking for evidence there.

Both Goodfellow Boulevard and the parking lot at the police station stayed closed until after 5:30 Wednesday morning.

Police could not immediately give a description of the vehicle carrying the gunman.
